Michelle Obama Interviewed Today by XM's Gayle King in Advance of Opening Night Address to the Democratic National Convention

NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Michelle Obama, wife of the presumptive Democratic party Presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, was today's featured guest on Gayle King's daily radio show, which airs on XM's "Oprah & Friends" channel (XM 156), kicking off The Gayle King Show's week of live broadcasts direct from the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. King's interview with Michelle Obama took place just hours before her opening night address to the Democratic Convention, where her husband will become the next Democratic presidential nominee. Selected excerpts from the interview are provided below.

Response to questions about her nerves in advance of this evening's speech:

"What I try to take in to every speech is 'just be yourself.' And that's easy to do. As long as I don't have to be anybody other than Michelle Obama, I figure I know me better than anybody. And I can do that pretty well."

On when she knew Sen. Joe Biden had been selected as Senator Obama's Vice Presidential pick:

"I knew before you knew, [Gayle] ... I knew before you did. But that's all I'll say. But people ask, did I play a role? Absolutely not ... I always tell him, 'This is your choice. You will be the president of the United States and you've got to have somebody that you can trust, that you think will have your back, that believes in you.' I give the general advice. Is the person a good man?"

On her daughters' reaction to Senator Obama's Vice Presidential selection:

"When I told the girls who the choice was ... I said, 'It's this man named Senator Biden.' And Malia, our oldest said, 'Well is he nice?' And we said, 'Yes, he's a very nice man. I met his family and he believes in family and he works hard,' and then she said 'Is he smart?' and I said 'He's very smart.' She was like, 'Well if he's a nice man and he's smart then it sounds like a good decision."

On her husband:

"The one thing that I can tell people is, Barack has not disappointed me once in the 20 years or more that I've known him. Not once. And that's the only reason why I can be sitting here."
